Resilient Ravens Post Thrilling Overtime Victory in NEKL Semifinal

The SBCS Ravens sure know how to entertain a huge crowd, fighting point for point with the Valley Falls Dragons during their NEKL Tournament Semifinal Game at Valley Falls. The Ravens had many highs and lows throughout the game, with the Ravens and Dragons never pulling more than six points ahead of the other. SBCS was down by one at the half, 22-23. The Ravens then trailed by a basket, 30-32, at the end of the third quarter. The game was sent to overtime, tied at 46, after Grant Kocour drove to the basket with less than four seconds remaining when he got the ball. Kocour drove the length of the court, and popped up on a short jumper as time expired. The Ravens fell behind by as many as five points in the three minute overtime period before solid defense, several steals, and outstanding offensive rebounds secured the 53-52 victory for SBCS. Samuel Peitsch scored on a rebounded basket, just before the buzzer sounded, to win the game for the Ravens.

SBCS was led by Samuel Peitsch, who posted his first double-double of the season. Peitsch scored 20 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and made two steals. Drew Caudle aided the Ravens with his 12 points, three rebounds, five steals, and an assist. In addition to scoring the game tying basket to force overtime, Grant Kocour scored 10 points, posted 5 rebounds, made a team-high four assists, and captured two steals. Kolbran Korbelik did his part for SBCS, scoring six points, grabbing four rebounds, forcing three steals, and contributing one assist. Kenny Howard added a basket and four rebounds. Brody Mispagel added three points and four rebounds.

SBCS will take on Everest in the NEKL Tournament Final on Saturday morning, February 25. Tip-off is set for 10:15am at Valley Falls. Good luck, Ravens! 


Outside Shooting Keeps #6 SBCS in Quarterfinal Game Against #3 Jackson Heights

SBCS drained a total of eight 3-pointers in their quarterfinal game against the Jackson Heights Cobras on Monday night at Pleasant Ridge. Outside shooting helped the Ravens compete with the large Jackson Heights posts who make getting the ball inside quite difficult. The Ravens led for most of the first half, before the Cobras were able to pound the ball inside enough to secure the victory in the final quarter. At halftime, SBCS held on to a one point lead, 19-18. Ultimately, Jackson Heights stopped several Ravens attempts at a 3-pointer in the final minute to secure the 39-36 win.

Kenny Howard led the Ravens with 13 points and six rebounds, including three 3-pointers in the first half. Drew Caudle was right behind with 13 points, four rebounds, and an assist. Grant Kocour added five points, four rebounds, two steals, and an assist. Other SBCS scorers were Brody Mispagel (3) and Samuel Peitsch (2). Peitsch added seven rebounds to lead the Ravens in that category.

SBCS will now take on the loser of the #2 Pleasant Ridge and #7 Valley Falls game. The Ravens next game will be played on Thursday, February 23, at Valley Falls. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:15pm. Good luck to the Ravens in the rest of the NEKL tournament! 


Ravens Execute Great Team Victory at Jackson Heights

The Ravens pulled together an outstanding team effort in their victory over the Cobras in Jackson Heights on Thursday night. In the last regular season game of the season, SBCS played without a couple key players due to illness, and still managed to beat the tough Jackson Heights team. SBCS had lost to Jackson Heights earlier in the season, 38-23. However, the Ravens posted a 31-27 victory on the Cobras court to equalize the season standings. SBCS and Jackson Heights will meet again on Monday night, February 20, in a quarterfinal game of the NEKL Tournament.

In the A Game, Samuel Peitsch led the Ravens with nine points, seven rebounds, and two steals. Kenny Howard added six points, five rebounds, and an assist. Grant Kocour played a solid game, seeing the court well with his three assists, in addition to posting five points and five rebounds. Drew Caudle added another five points for SBCS. Kolbran Korbelik ended with three points and five boards to round out the Ravens scoring.

The B Game was the sole game that didn’t go the way of the Ravens at Jackson Heights. SBCS fell 17-30. Leif Malm, Carson VanDyke, Drew Caudle, Samuel Peitsch, and Jackson Spencer all broke into the scoring column for the Ravens. Samuel Peitsch led the team in rebounds with five, while Andy Brox added three rebounds.

Only two quarters were played in the C Game, but that was enough time for the Ravens to secure a 10-3 win. Joseph Mulholland led the Ravens with 6 points, on his pair of 3-pointers. Mulholland also added five rebounds and an assist. Andy Brox played a solid game for the Ravens, crashing the boards with a total of ten. Brox added a basket off a rebound as well. Carson VanDyke was the other Ravens scorer in the game.

NEKL Tournament play will being on Monday, February 20. The #6-seeded SBCS Ravens will face #3 Jackson Heights in the quarterfinal round at Pleasant Ridge. Game time is set for 4:30pm. Good luck to the Ravens! 


Ravens Secure Victory Over Cross Town Rival AMS on 8th Grade Night

The SBCS Ravens were ready to play on Monday night as they took on their cross town rivals, the Atchison Middle School Braves. SBCS posted a 40-25 victory on 8th Grade Night. The high scorer for the Raven was Samuel Peitsch with 13 points. Peitsch added eight rebounds to his stellar night. Brody Mispagel led the 8th graders with 12 points and three rebounds. Kenny Howard’s 11 points and seven rebounds also greatly aided the Raven effort. Kolbran Korbelik and Grant Kocour also scored baskets for SBCS.

In the B Game, the Ravens put up a valiant effort, but ultimately lost 31-21. Leif Malm’s big game had him finish with nine points and four rebounds. Joseph Mulholland added another eight points and two rebounds. Jackson Spencer scored four points, including an exciting three-pointer. Spencer also blocked three shots.

Ten 8th graders were honored at a brief ceremony between games- Andy Brox, Kenny Howard, Garrett Johnson, Grant Kocour, Kolbran Korbelik, Leif Malm, Willie Noll, Brody Mispagel, Jackson Spencer, and Samuel Underwood. SBCS is very thankful for their time and dedication to Raven basketball this season.

The Ravens will play on the road at Jackson Heights on Thursday night before beginning play in the NEKL Tournament next week. Game time for Thursday at Jackson Heights is set for 4:30pm, with all three teams back in action, in the usual B, C, A order. Good luck, Ravens. 


SBCS Holds off Dragons in Valley Falls

The Ravens played a roller coaster of a game in Valley Falls on Thursday night. SBCS jumped out to a 14-10 lead, and then allowed the Dragons to go on a 13-5 run in the second quarter. The Ravens still struggled to find their rhythm right after halftime, but eventually worked back into the game. In the final quarter, SBCS scored 17 points, going on the defeat Valley Falls 47-43.

Kenny Howard’s 16 points sparked the Raven offense and anchored the SBCS comeback at the end of the game. Howard added eight rebounds, three steals, and an assist to his stellar night. Drew Caudle’s eleven points and eight rebounds also provided good ammunition in the Raven attack. Brody Mispagel scored eight points, grabbed five rebounds, and made four steals. Six points were added to the scoreboard by Kolbran Korbelik, and five points were scored by Samuel Peitsch. Grant Kocour added five rebounds and two assists to the Raven’s tally.

In the B Game, the Ravens posted a 26-17 victory. Samuel Peitsch played his best game of the season, scoring 16 points. Additionally, Peitsch grabbed five rebounds and made two steals. Other SBCS scorers in the game included Drew Caudle with three points, Samuel Underwood with three points, Joseph Mulholland with two points, and Jackson Spencer with one point. Samuel Underwood led the team in rebounds, grabbing a total of 12 boards. The Ravens worked together as a team to make nine total steals.

While the C game didn’t end in favor of the Ravens, it was still a hard fought game. Leif Malm led the Ravens with five points and five rebounds. Joseph Mulholland added three points, while Carson VanDyke, Andy Brox, and Braeden Worsham each added two points. Brox and Worsham added six rebounds apiece for the Ravens.

The Ravens will be in action next Monday, February 13, at home. SBCS will take on cross-town rival, Atchison Middle School. There will be two games, beginning at 4:30pm. Monday night is also 8th grade night, where ten SBCS student-athletes will be recognized in their final home game in the Senecal Gym. Good luck! 


Ravens Sweep McLouth for Second Time this Season

SBCS swept McLouth for the second time in the season, posting three commanding victories over the Bulldogs. The Ravens won the A Game 53-42 behind a balanced scoring effort from several key players.  Drew Caudle was the leading scorer with 16 points, while also grabbing five rebounds. Kolbran Korbelik was close behind with 14 points and seven rebounds. Kenny Howard’s eight points and four rebounds and Grant Kocour’s seven points and five rebounds greatly helped the offensive attack by the Ravens. Brody Mispagel scored six points while Samuel Peitsch scored two.

The Ravens were also victorious in the B Game, winning 32-16. Drew Caudle led the Ravens with nine points. Leif Malm and Samuel Peitsch each scored six points for the Ravens. Carson VanDyke added a pair of baskets, while Joseph Mulholland sank a three-pointer. Samuel Underwood contributed a basket, and Andy Brox and Braeden Worsham connected on free throws.

The C Game was dominated by the Ravens, as they scored 20 points, while allowing the Bulldogs only one basket in three quarters of play. Carson VanDyke led the Ravens with eight points, while Leif Malm added another 6 points. VanDyke and Malm also added four rebounds each. Joseph Mulholland, Andy Brox, and Braeden Worsham also scored for the Ravens. Andy Brox grabbed a season-high seven rebounds. Carson VanDyke and Joseph Mulholland secured three steals with their quick reactions throughout the game.

The Ravens will play at Valley Falls on Thursday night, February 9. All three teams will be in action with tip off set for 4:30pm. Good luck, Ravens! 


Ravens Fall in Close Games at Everest

SBCS put up valiant efforts in each of their three games in Everest on Thursday night, but couldn’t quite secure a victory against the Chargers. In the A Game, the Ravens fell 39-40, battling back from being down eight points early in the fourth quarter. While the Ravens would get down, they were never out, making it a game down to the very last second. Free throws proved to be the biggest nemesis for the Ravens, as they made only 7/25.

Kenny Howard was the leading scorer for the Ravens with 13 points. Grant Kocour followed that up with 10 points, while grabbing six rebounds. Samuel Peitsch, in his first A Team start of the season, scored seven points and had six rebounds. Drew Caudle posted five points, six rebounds, and two steals. Kolbran Korbelik added three points, two rebounds, and an assist.

In the B Game, the Ravens fell 32-39. The game was tight throughout the entire game, with both teams working hard to gain an edge. Drew Caudle led SBCS with 13 points. Samuel Underwood’s big game greatly aided the Ravens, as he scored six points, recorded a team-high eight rebounds, and forced four steals. Samuel Peitsch added four points, seven rebounds, and a steal. The Ravens spread their scoring around, as several other Ravens broke into the scoring column. Joseph Mulholland finished with three points, while Carson VanDyke, Leif Malm, and Jackson Spencer all made a basket.

The Ravens also fell to the Chargers 10-14, in the half C game that was played. Joseph Mulholland, Jackson Spencer, and Braeden Worsham all contributed for the Raven points in the game.

SBCS will return home on Monday, February 6, to host the McLouth Bulldogs. Game time is set for a 4:30pm tip-off for the B Game, with the C Game and A Game to follow. Good luck, Ravens!


Ravens Sweep Bears to End Mid-Season Skid

The SBCS Ravens put a stop to their mid-season skid, sweeping the Bears on the road in Oskaloosa. All three Raven teams came away with close, hard-fought victories. In the A Game, the Ravens secured a 46-41 victory with some timely shooting and great team play. The two teams went back and forth the whole game, with neither team ever leading by more than a couple baskets. At the end of the 3rd quarter, the score was tied at 26 all.

Grant Kocour led the Ravens with 11 points, five steals, two rebounds, and two assists. Kolbran Korbelik added 10 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Korbelik also posted three rebounds, two steals, and an assist. Drew Caudle’s clutch shooting in the final quarter greatly helped the Ravens as part of his 10 point game. Kenny Howard added seven points for the Ravens, as well as three steals. Similarly, Brody Mispagel also added seven points, and tacked on four rebounds and three assists.

The B Game also proved to be an exciting one for the Ravens, as SBCS hung on for a one point victory. The Ravens doubled their point total in the 4th quarter, winning 23-22, after being down 11-12 to begin. Drew Caudle led the Ravens will ten points, including two three-pointers. Samuel Peitsch added 4 points, four rebounds, and an assist. Joseph Mulholland connected on a three-pointer. Carson VanDyke and Samuel Underwood also scored baskets for the Ravens, with Underwood also grabbing four rebounds.

SBCS made the C game an excited one as well, defeating the Bears 10-7 in three quarters. Carson VanDyke led all scorers with four points. Leif Malm led the team in rebounds with two, and scored three points. Joseph Mulholland and Braeden Worsham also scored for SBCS.

The Ravens remain on the road this Thursday, as they take on the Chargers at Everest. Game time is at 4:30pm, with the B Game tipping first, followed by the C Game (3 quarters), and the A game. Good luck to the Ravens!  


Raiders Run Over Ravens in Catholic School Clash

The Immaculata Raiders made their presence known in the Senecal Gym on Thursday night, cruising past the Ravens 57-27. The Ravens couldn’t stop the tall and talented Immaculata team, making for a long night. The Raiders jumped out to a 23-3 first quarter lead, and never looked back. Brody Mispagel was the high scorer for the Ravens with 10 points. Kenny Howard added another eight points and three rebounds. Kolbran Korbelik, Drew Caudle, and Samuel Underwood also scored baskets for the Ravens.

In the B Game, the Ravens posted a solid 29-22 win. SBCS dropped behind early, trailing 6-12 at the half, but came back strong in the second half. Drew Caudle let the Ravens with 13 points and three rebounds. Samuel Peitsch played well offensively and defensively, scoring 10 points, grabbing four rebounds, and tallying one assist. Joseph Mulholland scored six points to aid the SBCS effort.

Due to limited players on both teams, the C game was only a ½ game. SBCS held on to win 9-8 after an intense finish in the final minute. Carson VanDyke led the Ravens with 4 points. Leif Malm added three points and grabbed two rebounds in the game. Joseph Mulholland and Braeden Worsham connected on free throws for the Ravens.

SBCS travels to Oskaloosa on Monday, January 30, to face the Bears. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 for the B Game. The C game will be 3 quarters, followed by the A Game. The Ravens stay on the road Thursday of next week, travelling to Everest on February 2. Good luck, Ravens! 


Ravens Can’t Stop JCN Charge

The SBCS Ravens dropped their third straight game of the season, falling to the JCN Chargers on the road Monday night. The Ravens put up a valiant effort in the first half, staying on pace with the fast and furious JCN team. However, JCN was able to pull away in the 4th quarter to post a 49-39 victory over SBCS.

Kenny Howard led the Ravens with 14 points on his sizzling 75% shooting percentage from the field. Howard added three rebounds for the Ravens. Brody Mispagel scored 11 points for the Ravens, including three 3 pointers. Grant Kocour added seven points and four rebounds, while Drew Caudle added five points and three rebounds. Kolbran Korbelik and Samuel Peitsch rounded out the Raven scoring with their free throws.

The B Game dealt the Ravens a 28-14 loss, after a scoreless 3rd quarter made it difficult for SBCS to stay in the game. Samuel Peitsch led the Ravens with six points and nine rebounds. Drew Caudle added another four points, while Joseph Mulholland added a three pointer. Samuel Underwood greatly aided the Ravens on defense with his seven boards and two steals.

The Raven C team once again made things exciting, but ultimately fell just short of capturing the victory. SBCS lost 12-15 in three quarters of play. Jackson Spencer, Braeden Worsham, and Leif Malm all scored for the Ravens.

SBCS returns home to host Immaculata on Thursday night, January 26. The B game will tip at 4:30, with the C game and A game to follow. The C game will only be two quarters against Immaculata due to the low numbers of players on both teams. Good luck, Ravens!
