Lady Ravens Victorious in NEKL Finals; Earn 7th Place

The SBCS Lady Ravens were victorious in their final game of the 2017, defeating Valley Falls 14-13 in the NEKL Tournament 7th Place Game. After splitting the regular season meetings, the game was up for grabs for either the Ravens or Dragons. SBCS won the first game of the season back in October against the Dragons, and then dropped the November meeting on the road in Valley Falls. Looking to end their season on a positive note, and secure a final win, the Lady Ravens were ready to play on Saturday morning.

Eighth grader Zoey Stec was the leading scorer for the Lady Ravens, in her final game for SBCS. Hannah Kocour and Scarlett Begley also scored for the Lady Ravens.

The win today and the 7th place finish marks the best finish for SBCS in girls basketball over the past three years. SBCS finishes the 2017 season with a 5-10 overall record. Congratulations to the Lady Ravens for a fun season!

Lady Ravens Struggle in NEKL Semifinals

The SBCS Lady Ravens looked weak on Thursday night in their NEKL Tournament semifinal game against the Oskoloosa Bears. The #7 Ravens struggled to score points in their 8-12 loss to the #6 Bears. SBCS had already defeated Oskaloosa twice this season, 16-15 on October 16, and 17-15 on November 16.

Margaret Mary Kerr led the Ravens in several categories including points scored (4), in steals (5), and was second in rebounds (3). Hannah Kocour scored the only other Raven field goal, on a nice jumper from the baseline. Kocour also posted 3 rebounds and a steal. Emily Beien and Zoey Stec connected on one free throw each. Elizabeth Humburg posted a team-high 5 rebounds in the game.

The loss sends SBCS to the 7th Place game in the NEKL Tournament for the third year in a row. The Lady Ravens will play Valley Falls on Saturday morning at 9:00am. The game will be in the McLouth Purple Gym. Good luck to the Lady Ravens in the final game of the season!

Lady Ravens Drop Quarterfinal Game in NEKL Tournament

SBCS faced JCN for the third time this season, and the second time in the last week, in a Quarterfinal Game in the Northeast Kansas League Tournament. The Lady Ravens have significantly cut down the margin of loss against the Chargers as the season has progressed. Tonight, SBCS fell 11-24, but trailed only 7-15 at halftime.

St. Benedict’s balanced scoring attack helped to keep the Ravens in the game. Zoey Stec led the Ravens with 4 points and 2 steals. Emily Beien added a basket, while securing 5 rebounds. Hannah Kocour made a basket and got 3 rebounds, while Norah Koechner connected on the 3-pointer and secured 2 rebounds. Elizabeth Humburg led the Lady Ravens defensively, grabbing 6 rebounds. Margaret Mary Kerr posted a team-high 4 steals.

The #7 SBCS Ravens will now face the #6 Oskaloosa Bears in a semifinal game on Thursday night, December 7. The game will tip at 5:45pm, at McLouth. Good luck to the Lady Ravens as they continue in the NEKL tournament!

Ravens Play Solid Game on 8th Grade Night

The SBCS girls basketball team put together a great game, both offensively and defensively, to play the tough and talented JCN team very close. The Ravens had fallen to the Chargers 3-42 back in October, committing a season high 25 turnover in the process. However, tonight was a very different story! SBCS made key plays throughout the game, keeping the game within striking distance. Not once did SBCS let JCN get more than nine points ahead. SBCS cut their turnovers in half, making only 12 in tonight’s meeting. In fact, the Chargers outscored the Ravens 20-0 in the first quarter alone on October 23, but the Ravens held the Chargers to 20 points in the whole game tonight! Despite the Ravens tremendous effort and improvement, they still fell 11-20 in the A Game.

Emily Beien led the Lady Ravens with 4 points and 9 rebounds. Scarlett Begley added 3 points, while Zoey Stec and Norah Koechner each added a basket. Elizabeth Humburg added 5 rebounds for the Lady Ravens.

In the B game, the Chargers were 18-13 winners over the Ravens. Elizabeth Humburg and Zoey Stec each scored 4 points, greatly helping their team during their last game in the Senecal Gym. Norah Koechner, Margaret Kerr, and Emily Beien also scored for SBCS. Hannah Kocour led the team in rebounds with 3.

Three 8th graders were recognized between games as they celebrated playing their last home game in the Senecal Gym tonight. Elizabeth Humburg, Sadee Mason, and Zoey Stec have contributed a great deal to the SBCS girls basketball program over the last two years. Mary Wurtz, currently out of the country on a family trip, was the fourth Lady Raven 8th grader to represent SBCS so well this season. We thank them for their dedication.

SBCS travels to Jackson Heights on Thursday, November 30. The Lady Ravens will play the B game at 4:30, followed by the A Game. Good luck to the Lady Ravens in the last regular season game. NEKL Tournament play begins next Monday.

Lady Ravens Falter in Fourth Quarter at Valley Falls

The Lady Ravens split their games in Valley Falls on Monday night. While both games were close, SBCS was only able to secure the victory in the B Game. The Ravens defeated the Dragons 19-13, before falling in the A Game 16-20.

In B Game action, Zoey Stec burst onto the scene, in her first game back after sustaining a concussion almost three weeks ago. Stec scored 7 points to lead the team. Emily Beien and Norah Koechner each scored a pair of baskets for SBCS, while Scarlett Begley and Hannah Kocour each added 2 points for the Lady Ravens. Elizabeth Humburg led SBCS in rebounds with 3. Margaret Mary Kerr posted 2 steals.

The Ravens controlled most of the A game, leading for the whole game until the 4th quarter. Valley Falls connected on a three-pointer off an inbounds play that proved to seal the game early in the final quarter. Scarlett Begley had one of her best games of the season, scoring 6 points and grabbing 3 rebounds. Begley’s strong and early scoring set the tone for the Ravens. Emily Beien added another 6 points for the Ravens, while also helping tremendously on defense with her 8 rebounds. Zoey Stec was the other SBCS scorer, adding 4 points to the Raven total. Margaret Mary Kerr added two assists for the Ravens, and Begley and Koechner also tallied assists.

SBCS will be off on Thursday for the Thanksgiving holiday, and will resume NEKL play on Monday, November 28, 2017. The Ravens will host JCN for 8th grade night. JCN won the previous match-up between the two teams back in mid-October. Good luck to the Lady Ravens!

Lady Ravens Post Win Over Oskaloosa

The SBCS Lady Ravens swept the Bears at the Senecal Gym on Thursday evening, posting two wins for the second time this season over Oskaloosa. The win moves SBCS to 4-6 overall and 4-5 in the NEKL.

The Lady Ravens started the night off with a 10-5 win in the B Game. Due to a limited number of players, SBCS was only able to play a ½ B Game. After only one point was scored in the first quarter, SBCS came alive in the second to post a 10-5 victory. Emily Beien scored 6 points and grabbed 3 rebounds. Norah Koechner sank a basket for the Ravens, while Elizabeth Humburg connected on a pair of free throws. Margaret Mary Kerr totaled 3 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 assists.

In the A Game, the Ravens stayed about a basket in front of the Bears for nearly the whole game, and that is exactly how the game ended. With an 8-6 lead at the half, the Ravens made several good plays, but could never pull away from the relentless Bears. However, with solid defense at the end, the Ravens pulled out the 17-15 victory.

Emily Beien posted her second double-double of the season, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Hannah Kocour greatly helped the Ravens with her 4 points, while also grabbing 3 rebounds and making 1 assist. Scarlett Begley added a basket and 3 rebounds, while Norah Koechner got into the scoring column with a free throw. Elizabeth Humburg grabbed a season-high 8 rebounds in her great efforts to contribute to the Lady Raven cause. Margaret Mary Kerr added 4 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 assists.

The Lady Ravens travel to Valley Falls next Monday, November 20, to take on the Dragons. SBCS won the first meeting between these two teams, 15-12, back on October 19. Good luck to the Lady Ravens, in their last game before the Thanksgiving holiday break. Go SBCS!

Ravens Come from Behind to Beat Rams in OT during B Game; Fall in the A Game

SBCS was victorious in the B Game at Pleasant Ridge on Monday night, but couldn’t get things going in the A Game. With the same Ravens playing in both the B and A Games, it can be difficult to stay strong against the bigger teams.

In the B Game, SBCS put together a strong 4th quarter to come from behind to force overtime. After trailing 2-9 at halftime, the Ravens began to inch closer and closer to the Rams with their tight defense and getting some of their shots to fall. By the end of the 3rd quarter, the Ravens still trailed the Rams 7-12. SBCS kept pushing, and ultimately got within one point. Hannah Kocour tied the game on a free throw with 41 seconds remaining. With the scored tied 12-12, time ran out and forced overtime. Scarlett Begley scored the winning basket, and Mary Wurtz got the assist, as she passed across the lane to Begley after the inbounds pass. Other Raven scorers in the game included Margaret Mary Kerr (4), Elizabeth Humburg (3), and Emily Beien (2). Scarlett Begley and Elizabeth Humburg grabbed 3 rebounds each, while Norah Koechner greatly helped the Ravens with her 5 steals.

The A Game didn’t go quite as smoothly for the Ravens, as they struggled to break the Rams press in the first half. SBCS trailed 1-8 at the end of the first quarter, and 2-14 by halftime. Sloppy passes and turnovers again halted the Raven effort. SBCS only made one field goal all evening, a 3-pointer by Norah Koechner which she swished through from the right top of the arc in the 3rd quarter. Emily Beien grabbed 6 rebounds and Hannah Kocour grabbed 5 rebounds for the Ravens. Margaret Mary Kerr made 2 steals.

The Ravens return home to host Oskaloosa on Thursday, November 16. Tip off is set for 4:30pm for the B Game, with the A Game to follow. The Ravens defeated the Bears by one point (16-15) in their first meeting back in October. Good luck to the Ravens!

SBCS Falls to In-Town Rival AMS

The SBCS Lady Ravens put up a valiant fight against Atchison Middle School, but couldn’t pull out a victory in either game. Turnovers again halted the SBCS effort. With only nice players total for the second game in a row, the Ravens played very hard, but simply ran out of energy at the end. The AMS Braves height and speed propelled them to two victories over the Ravens.

In the A game, SBCS managed to score only 10 points, although many Ravens scored. Emily Beien, Elizabeth Humburg, Norah Koechner, and Hannah Kocour all made basket for SBCS. Humburg led the team in rebounds with six. Margaret Mary Kerr posted three steals. The Braves ultimately prevailed 28-10.

In the B Game, the score was tied for much of the night. The Braves eventually edged the Ravens 10-8 in the final quarter. Margaret Mary Kerr scored four points and made three steals. Norah Koechner and Emily Beien also scored for SBCS.

The Ravens will stay on the road next Monday, as they travel to Pleasant Ridge. Tip-off is set for 4:30pm for the B game. The A game will follow. Good luck to the Lady Ravens!

Lady Ravens Victorious in Catholic School Clash

SBCS hosted Xavier, the only other Catholic School in the NEKL on Monday night, and the Lady Ravens prevailed in both the A and B games. Not only did the Ravens secure the win, they also posted a season-high 30 points in the A game. The game was close for much of the first half, before the Ravens eventually began to pull away in the third quarter. SBCS defeated Xavier 30-19.

Emily Beien led the Lady Ravens, as she posted her first double-double of the season. Beien finished with 12 points and 17 rebounds. Elizabeth Humburg also played a big role in the Raven win, as she scored 6 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Hannah Kocour and Norah Koechner added 4 points and 2 assists each, while combining for another 8 rebounds. Margaret Kerr and Scarlett Begley also scored for the Lady Ravens. Kerr led the team in assists with 3, while she also pulled down 4 rebounds and made 3 steals. Grace Raplinger contributed 2 assists to the Raven effort.

In the B game, the Ravens prevailed 20-16. Norah Koechner led SBCS with 8 points, including being 2/2 from the free throw line. Koechner also grabbed 5 rebounds and made 2 steals. Emily Beien added 4 points and 3 rebounds, while Scarlett Begley, Hannah Kocour, and Mary Wurtz also scored for the Lady Ravens. Kerr continued her hot streak with steals, posting 5 in the game. Kocour and Kerr led SBCS in rebounds with 5 apiece.

SBCS will play a non-league game on Thursday night, November 9, at Atchison Middle School. Game time is set for an earlier tip-off of 4:00pm. Also different than usual, the A game will be played first, followed by the B game. Good luck to the Lady Ravens against this cross-town rival!

Lady Ravens Bit by Bulldogs in Home Loss

SBCS suffered their fourth straight A Game loss tonight, falling to the McLouth Bulldogs at home. Despite a great cheering section of Raven fans, the Lady Ravens were unable to put together any big runs in the game, making it difficult for them to keep pace with the Bulldogs. McLouth owed a 17-7 halftime lead, and the Lady Ravens eventually fell 12-26.

Emily Beien led the Ravens with 4 points and 6 rebounds. Zoey Stec added 3 points and 4 rebounds, while Hannah Kocour scored 3 points and grabbed 2 rebounds. Margaret Kerr also scored for the Lady Ravens, while she maintained her tough defense, making 5 steals. Norah Koechner and Elizabeth Humburg helped the Ravens by securing 4 rebounds apiece.

The Lady Ravens prevailed in the B Game, posting a 21-4 win. Hannah Kocour and Emily Beien led the Raven change, with each of them scoring 4 points. Margaret Mary Kerr and Norah Koechner added another 3 points each. Kerr posted a sizzling season-high 11 steals in the game. Other Ravens scorers included Grace Raplinger and Scarlett Begley, each with a basket. Sadee Mason led the Ravens in rebounding with 5 boards, while Mary Wurtz added another 4 rebounds. Elizabeth Humburg, Kerr, and Beien all finished the game with an assist.

SBCS, now 2-4, plays at home again on Monday, November 6, at 4:30pm. Xavier will visit the Senecal Gym to take on the Ravens. Good luck, SBCS!
