The SBCS Lady Ravens captured a pair of NEKL Championships on Thursday, May 2. The Lady Ravens won the 8th grade league meet with 92 total points! Jackson Heights finished in 2nd place with 86 points. Successfully defending their championship from 7th grade, five young ladies are NEKL Track Champions- Scarlett Begley, Emily Beien, Kylie Green, Margaret Kerr, and Norah Koechner- for the second straight year! And this year, they won the meet with the tremendous addition of teammates Grace Raplinger and Faith Merkle. Yes, that’s right, the 8th grade girls won the meet again with the help of grace and faith, indeed! It was truly a team effort, with everyone contributing her part. Scarlett Begley won gold medals in the high jump (4’10”) and in the mile (6:48); along with a silver in the 800m. Emily Beien defended her shot put title, with an impressive 33’9” put, along with a 2nd place finish in the discus. Margaret Kerr claimed the NEKL title in the 400m at 1:09, while taking 2nd in the 200m and 3rd in the 100m. Norah Koechner leapt to a huge PR with a 13’7” for a 2nd place finish in long jump. Congratulations to all the Lady Ravens on such a successful track career at SBCS!

In the 7th grade division, the Lady Ravens were also champions! The Ravens scored 86 points, narrowly defeating Pleasant Ridge with 84 points, to claim the 7th grade NEKL Championship! In fact, the final meet standings came down to the last race of the day, the sprint medley relay, in which SBCS (2:12) edged Pleasant Ridge (2:13) to secure the team win.  Each person had to finish exactly where they did to capture the exciting win! Hope Baniewicz led the way with a 1st place and NEKL record-setting performance in the triple jump with a leap of 29’0”. Baniewicz also finished 2nd in the 100m and 3rd in the 200m. Neah Servaes secured 3rd place in the 400m, Cora Thorne threw the discus 75’4” to capture 2nd place, and Clare Harris and Nora Colwell soared to 2nd and 3rd place finishes in the long jump to round out the individual medals winners for SBCS! Congratulations to all the Lady Ravens on an outstanding meet to conclude a very successful season!

The 8th grade boys also had success in the league meet, finishing in 6th place overall, with 35 total points. And despite being held scoreless, the 7th grade boys ended their season with some great PRs.

The SBCS 7th Grade Girls won the Northeast Kansas League Championship on Friday, scoring 109 total points. The Lady Ravens defeated tough teams from Jackson Heights and JCN to claim the league title, the first league track championship for SBCS as a member of the NEKL. Scarlett Begley is NEKL champion in all four of her events- High Jump, 800, 1600, and 3200. Additionally, Begley set a league record in the 3200 with a time of 15:00.02. Margaret Mary Kerr also greatly aided the Lady Raven effort, winning the 100 and 400, and taking second in the 200. Kerr also finished second in the high jump, after only competing in the event twice. Throwers Emily Beien and Kylie Green took care of their jobs too, racking up points early in the meet for the Ravens. Beien won the shot put, and finished third in the discus. Green took second in the discus and fourth in the shot put. Norah Koechner also helped her team to the championship with her fourth place performance in triple jump, and her sixth place finish in the 75m hurdles. While there are only five 7th grade girls, every single one of them did exactly what they needed to do to earn the NEKL Championship! Congratulations on the league crown, ladies!

The 7th Grade Boys also had a good day, led by throwers Sam Joyce and Mark Harris, along with distance runner Eli Black. The Ravens finished fourth in the 7th Grade Boys Division. Sam Joyce is league champion in the shot put, while Mark Harris took second place. In the discus, Joyce was third, while Harris was fourth. Eli Black ran a PR in the 800, and then finished in fourth place in the 3200. The Raven triple jumpers also had a great day, with Miles DuLac finishing in fourth place and Eli Black taking fifth. The Medley Relay team of Sam Joyce, Eli Black, Miles DuLac, and Mark Harris finished in sixth place.

The 8th Grade Ravens were small in number, but achieved many PRs personally. Zoey Stec is the NEKL Champion in the Discus for the second year in a row. Charlotte Haigh had a big PR in the mile and finished third, while also securing sixth place in the triple jump. Elizabeth Humburg finished fourth in the 200, fifth in the 400, and sixth in the 75m Hurdles to end her SBCS career by scoring in each of her events. Helen Harris finished fourth in the 3200 in the middle of a hot, sunny afternoon.  While the 8th Grade Boys didn’t score points, Kaden Haupt and Carson VanDyke had very successful days personally, both ended their SBCS track careers with PRs in multiple events.

Congratulations to all the Ravens on an outstanding season! Way to go!!!

After waiting almost a month to compete at an in-town meet, when snow and cold temperature forced AMS to postpone the meet, the Ravens were ready to race, throw, and jump in front of the home crowd. The Ravens performed well against schools much bigger than SBCS. The 6th/7th grade girls took 2nd place, finishing behind a strong Hiawatha team, but defeated rival AMS. The 6th/7th boys, as well as the 8th graders in both girls and boys divisions finished in 3rd place. Several Ravens achieved personal bests on a beautiful day for a track meet! The 6th/7th Grade Girls captured the team title, scoring 175 total points! The 6th/7th Grade Boys and the 8th Grade Girls secured 2nd Place team finishes, while the 8th Grade boys finished with a season-best 3rd Place team finish.

SBCS competed at the JCN Relays on Thursday afternoon, enjoying a cool and sunny afternoon at the track. The meet included many unique events that the Ravens don’t often get to experience- such as the softball throw, distance medley relay, and thrower’s relay.

The 6th/7th Grade Girls were led by first place finishes in the 400 (Margaret Mary Kerr), and Shot Put (Emily Beien). Multiple other Ravens medaled in individual events and relays to stack up the team points. On the 6th/7th Grade Boy’s side, the Raven throwing duo of Mark Harris and Sam Joyce led the Ravens, both of them placing in all three throwing events. Eli Black also greatly helped the Ravens as he placed in each of his four events. As for the 8th Grade, medalists included Charlotte Haigh, Elizabeth Humburg, Zoey Stec, and Samuel Peitsch, as each of them earned a top three finish in at least one event.

Despite the tough competition among the 11 schools in attendance at the meet, SBCS still performed very well. Top finishers in their events are listed below. Great job to all the Raven athletes!

SBCS completed a stellar day at the Everest Invitational on Monday afternoon in Horton. After snow postponed the Everest Meet earlier in April, the Ravens were ready to hit the ground running (and throwing and jumping) at a meet that is often an athlete favorite. The 6th/7th Grade Girls Division led the Ravens with a 2nd Place finish, scoring 118 total points. The Lady Ravens missed the championship by a mere point and a half! The 6th/7th Grade Boys Division finished with 84 points in 4th Place. The 8th Grade Girls and Boys Divisions both finished 6th in team standings with 44 points and 20 points, respectively.

Three SBCS student-athletes had triple gold performances. Margaret Kerr won the 100, 200, and 400. Scarlett Begley earned top honors in the 800, Mile, and High Jump. Parrish Beagle reigned king in the 400, 800, and Long Jump. In addition, several other Ravens claimed gold medals and set PRs. Below is a list of all the Ravens who placed in events.
