Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a Montessori-based method of spiritual formation built on the two pillars of scripture and liturgy. It began in Rome 68 years ago, and now exists in 65 countries. The “atrium” is a place of prayer, a room specially prepared for children to grow in their relationship with Christ and in their knowledge of the Catholic faith. Children receive individual presentations on scripture, liturgy, control-of-movement, and grace-and-courtesy. During their work time, they choose hands-on materials to further explore and contemplate the themes of these presentations.
The atrium program is supported by St. Benedict Catholic School, which provides the atrium space for 3- 6 year olds, and Maur Hill-Mount Academy, where the atrium for children ages 6-12 is located. The catechist in each session has received between 90 and 285 hours of formation in theology, pedagogy, and child development. During a normal year, the CGS program serves around 100 children in our parish community each week.
